The third annual Northern Neck RiverRide is coming, September 26–28, 2008, and you are invited to take part in this exciting event. The Northern Neck RiverRide is designed to appeal to riders of all levels. The ride consists of the (5) basic routes: • Short Family Ride • 1/3 Century • Half Century • Metric Century • English Century Over 700 cyclists are expected to participate in this bike tour, highlighting the scenic beauty of the byways and waterways of the lower Northern Neck, where Captain John Smith explored in 1608 and George Washington’s mother, Mary Ball, was born. All the information that you need to get ready for the Northern Neck RiverRide can be found at www.riverride.org. You’ll find the online registration form, list of accommodations, what to bring, and more. Registration is limited to 800 cyclists, so get your registration in early. Registrations received after the September 5th deadline will incur a late fee. The Northern Neck Chapter of BikeWalk Virginia and the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce are proud to present this event. Lecture: "A New Jersey Farmer in 18th-century Virginia: The Life & Times of Philip Vickers Fithian"

Lecture: “A New Jersey Farmer in 18th-century Virginia: The Life & Times of Philip Vickers Fithian” by historian and author John Fea on his new biography of Fithian. Fithian was one of early America's most prolific diary-writers and is best known in Northen Neck history for the diary he kept while a tutor to the Carter children at Nomini Hall. The book, The Way of Improvement Leads Home: Philip Vickers Fithian and the Rural Enlightenment, chronicles Fithian's youth as a south Jersey grain grower, his years as a student at the College of New Jersey at Princeton, his love affair with Elizabeth Beatty, his ordination to the Presbyterian ministry, his year as a tutor on Robert Carter III’s Nomini Hall plantation, his tour of the Shenandoah Valley, and his final years as a chaplain with Washington's army. Event will be held in the meeting room of the Lancaster Community Library in Kilmarnock. Free and open to the public. Donations accepted to benefit the non-profit host organizations, Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library and Lancaster Community Library. Book signing will follow the lecture. Books may be purchased at the event for a special discounted price of $23 by cash, check, or credit card.

Arts/crafts vendors, non-profit exhibitors, take out homemade Brunswick Stew, raffle, sausage biscuits and hot beverage for early arrivals,and bake sale to benefit the Family Maternity Center of the Northern Neck.
